Pharmacist of the YearArthur Boyd Jeffery
Arthur Boyd Jeffery, a pharmacist at Mountain View Hospital in Idaho Falls was selected as the 2008 ISHP Pharmacist of the Year. In her nomination letter Nancy Lundblade noted the following:
When Boyd started working at Mountain View as a staff pharmacist in 2006, I was immediately impressed with his clinical skills. Even though he graduated from pharmacy school 38 years ago he still loves pharmacy and learning. He reads his journals faithfully and is curious about all new pharmaceuticals. Boyd has instituted several new procedures in our daily dispensing routine that have improved patient safety and clinical outcomes. Recently he streamlined the process for identifying our surgical patient’s chronic medications and getting them on the chart for physician approval prior to surgery for continuity of care. He has worked with the lab to make sure the pharmacy has all the information necessary to make good clinical recommendations.
With Boyd, there is never a compromise -- legally, morally, or ethically. He is a tremendous patient advocate and is respected by our physicians. He is friendly and helpful to all of the staff and has become an ambassador of good will throughout the hospital. Boyd is also active in the community, helping organize and operate the Soup Kitchen in Blackfoot where he now resides.
Boyd is one of the pharmacists who make me proud to be a member of our profession.
Technician of the YearJamie Sommer
Jaime Sommer, CPhT, an employee of Portneuf Medical Center for three years, was recognized as the ISHP Pharmacy Technician of the Year for 2008. Prior to working at Portneuf Medical Center she attended ISU, where she was a member of Mortar Board. She graduated with bachelors degrees in microbiology and biochemistry. She became a nationally certified pharmacy technician in 2007.
One of her nominators mentioned, “One of the elements that makes Jaime unique and so outstanding is her ability to anticipate needs and meet them before that need has fully come to realization. This has enabled our operation to be efficient and run more smoothly. It also helps us to be prepared to handle unexpected changes that may come about in the course of a day, such as emergencies within the hospital, unanticipated labor shortages in our department, and unforeseen increases in workflow.”
Another emphasized, “Jaime works hard to maintain morale in our department. She organizes potlucks and birthday parties. She is a terrific cook and has a great collection of recipes including her “world-famous cornbread.” Jaime is accurate and dependable. She is always looking for better ways to do things. Clearly Jaime is quite an asset to the pharmacy department.
Outside of pharmacy, Jaime’s the proud mom of one daughter. She enjoys football, shopping and exercise.
Congratulations Jaime!
